I first met Rich in 1982 when he was nine years old. He was a bundle of mischievous energy, trying to show me his magic tricks, and asking me if I would be his big brother. One day we were out for a bike ride together near Hibernia, and on a steep downhill our bikes tangled and we both went down. He got the worst of it, but he wasn't angry even though, truth be told, it was probably my fault. He was a good-natured guy, a sweet kid. A few years later, he lived with Tracy and me for a few months...got a job at Denny's, and when I dropped him off at work on day one, he announced that he was going to "be the manager of that place someday." When I picked him up that night, the job was over, because they had asked him to clean toilets. That was the Rich I knew, energy and enthusiasm and good intentions, countered by some personal demons that he was never able to overcome. I won't pretend to have known him well, especially now, having barely seen him over the last 15 years or so. But I loved him and wanted the best for him. And finally, now, he is in a place with no pain, no struggles, and no toilets to clean. I love you, my little brother. Rest in Peace, Rich.
