Dear Dutchie and Brandon Family,

We remember Larry as a man who would give you the shirt off his back - or was it three shirts that made the trip to Hawaii with us in 1983?

We remember a deacon who delivered wise homilies with a dry sense of humor.

We remember the inspiration behind a compassionate Brian's Run, and his leadership, executed with wisdom and by example.

We remember watching a 76ers versus Celtics game with you both in which two NBA legends, Doctor J and Larry Byrd, met at half court prior to the game to reconcile after an earlier game altercation.

We have many wonderful memories ...

Sincerely,

Phil and Marilyn

Dear Dutchie and Brandon family,

I am saddened by the passing of Larry and sorry for your loss. He led a remarkable life. I loved his sermons (which, coming from me, is saying something!). There was tremendous depth, drawing on his vast personal experiences. I always learned something.

I will never forget a crisp Sunday, September 19, 1983, when Larry invited me to an Orioles game. This was before Camden Yards when you parked and walked through a neighborhood on the way to the ballpark. The Orioles were playing Milwaukee that day and a large group of us were in for a real treat: watching the game from the USF&G sky box! Now this was styling, my first time watching a sporting event from a suite! (I was 22 at the time.)

Future Hall of Famer Jim Palmer started the game for the Orioles. He was at the end of his career and got shelled, giving up 7 runs in the first inning. It seemed like the game was a bust, but I never gave up hope. There were still 8 innings left, the food and beer kept flowing, the weather was perfect, and we were all having fun. Finally, in the 8th inning, the Orioles mounted an epic comeback, scoring 6 runs to take a 9-7 lead, capped by Eddie Murray’s dramatic grand slam off Pete Ladd. The Brewers managed to score two runs in the top of the 9thand tie the game, but the Orioles won it in the bottom of the 9th with a walk-off single by John Stefero. That was a day I will always remember.

Larry influenced so many, probably more than you can possibly know. He spoke softly, but carried a big message.

With love and fond memories,
Kevin Duffy
