After a life well lived, Susan Parkinson has begun the next chapter of her adventures in a new location. Always up for a challenge, we will remember her fun loving, risk taking spirit with a smile
Born in Waynesburg, PA, Susan graduated from Waynesburg High School, where she was honored as “Best Athlete.” It was here that she developed her passion for all things equestrian. Beginning at age 4, Susan rode her pony, QB, in parades and local shows. By age 10, she began breaking, riding and showing for other barns and had also become adept at driving carriages.
Susan earned a B.S. in Health and Physical Education from Penn State University and a Masters in Education at West Chester University. She began her teaching career at Marple Newtown High School before joining the faculty at West Chester University as an Associate Professor. There she developed the riding program and co-coached the women’s swim team, along with Barb Karas. Under their leadership, WCU won the National Title in 1972 - before Title IX existed- against powerhouse programs like Notre Dame and University of Arizona. Susan was later inducted into the WCU Hall of Fame for her coaching achievements.
Her love of horses continued throughout her life, particularly her affection for Thoroughbreds. She competed in numerous hunter jumper trials, enjoyed fox hunting and racing Point to Point. She rode successfully at the Devon Horse Show many times and cherished long gallops in the open fields of Chester County riding until she no longer could.
An adventurer at heart, Susan loved hiking and climbing in the mountains of New England and Colorado. She completed a month-long Outward-Bound Program to challenge herself and grow as a leader. The first 2 weeks involved rigorous physical challenges to prepare her for a 3-night solo stay on a mountain with only a tarp and an ax-an experience she relished. The second 2 weeks Susan was given $5 and dropped off in the “wilderness” of Denver. Susan and a friend discovered a bar advertising four beers for a buck. They went in, had some beers and called a nearby friend - turns out, surviving in the city was no problem for Susan.
She found joy in golf, running, cycling and driving sport cars. She loved all things chocolate, a good glass of wine and a Dewars on the rocks with a splash and a twist. She hated Brussel sprouts. Most of all she was deeply devoted to her family, friends, horses and dogs.
Susan is survived by her wife and partner of 30 years, Karen Ludman, beloved horse Ben; dogs, Patch and Noah; brother Tom ( Jamie); nieces Katie Udoff and Lynne Parkinson.
We will be celebrating Susan’s amazing life on July 11, 2025 from 2-5 at Northbrook Market Place,1805 Wawaset Rd., West Chester, PA 19382.
