Stephen James Joseph Trecker, 76, of Bethany Beach, DE and Green Valley, AZ, formerly of Downingtown, died peacefully at his home surrounded by family on Wednesday March 5, 2025. He was the beloved husband of Pennylyn Greenwood Trecker.
Born March 13, 1948, in Chicago, IL he was the son of the late William Eugene Trecker and the late Mary Patricia Kerwin Trecker. Steve graduated from Huntington High School, NY in 1966. He served in the US Army from 1967-68. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin Whitewater in 1973.
Steve worked his entire career in the Surety industry. He authored multiple textbooks on the subject that are still in use today and was a sought-after public speaker on the topic. He retired as Senior Vice President of Surety Claims at XL insurance in 2010.
Steve loved spending time with friends and family. He was kind, generous with his love and had a fantastic sense of humor and quick wit. Colloquially known as “the Mayor”, he left a lasting impression on everyone he spent time with. Steve was a lifelong athlete; he was an excellent tennis player and golfer. He loved baseball and played softball well into his 70’s. He was extremely active and loved running, hiking, swimming and paddle boarding on the Indian River Bay. He was a founding member and 7-time champion of the Brandywine Ridge Fantasy Football League. Steve was always listening to music, often blasting it at full volume. His taste was eclectic, and he loved sharing his favorites with others.
He is survived by his wife, Pennylyn Trecker, son Christopher Trecker (Virginia), daughter Carrilin Trecker (Brendan McElrone) and grandchildren Jackson (7), Piper (5) and Louise (3). He is also survived by his brothers Bill & Tom and sisters Mary-Liz, Pat and Sue. He was predeceased by his dogs Spike (14), Rusty (10) and Mack (14).
