Obituary

Stephen J. McGann, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully at home on March 21, 2026, surrounded by those who loved him dearly. He battled Parkinson’s disease with grace and fortitude for many years. He is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Mary Evelyn, his daughter, Dr. Natalie McGann Abrams (David), his son, Ian McGann (Caitlin Bellucci), his grandchildren, Carter, Olivia, Aiden and Presley Abrams, his sister-in law, Sandra Alsterberg, his brothers, Frank McGann (Christine) and Mark McGann (Donna) and his sister, Rita Burkhardt. His loss will also be mourned by his many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Stephen was a proud graduate of Monsignor Bonner Catholic High School, West Chester University, and Temple University, where he earned his Master’s degree.  For the majority of his career, he worked in banking, with a deep commitment to his niche in special needs trusts. He served many institutions over the years, but his heart always remained with the original First National Bank of West Chester. He cherished being in the center of town—working, connecting with friends and neighbors, and walking the streets of his community.

Steve was a founding member of the West Chester Morning Rotary Club, where he also served as President. He was the Treasurer of the Chester County Bar Association for many years. He was also the first recipient of the Chester County Community Foundation’s Door Opener Award in 2004.

He loved the beach, but hated the sand. He loved fishing, but never caught the big one. He loved the outdoors, but never dressed in anything less than business casual. Over the years, he amassed an exceptional amount of home improvement expertise and never shied away from a challenging project—or a friend’s emergency call for help.

Perhaps most notable of all was his lifelong love of music. Though he couldn’t carry a tune or play an instrument, all who knew him appreciated his truly exceptional ear. His taste was eclectic; he never lost a game of music trivia, and his playlists were a thing of beauty that will play on for years to come.

After a long and debilitating battle with Parkinson’s that increasingly robbed Steve of his faculties—and at times his dignity—he was, by his own wish, able to live out his final days at home. Were it not for the tremendous support of the Penn Medicine Hospice team, this would not have been possible. For this, his family remains eternally grateful. His home was filled with family and friends, familiar sounds and smells, and the comfort of his beloved dogs. Among his final words were, “How lucky am I to have lived the ultimate life span.” Many stories, much admiration, and laughter were shared about a life well lived during his hospice journey. Friends and family alike described him as loyal, ethical, and successful in all that truly matters. Above all, Steve leaves behind a legacy of kindness that touched every life he encountered.

Relatives and friends are invited to his visitation on Saturday, April 11, 2026 from 9:30 am - 10:30 am at DellaVecchia, Reilly, Smith & Boyd Funeral Home, Inc. 410 North Church Street West Chester, PA 19380, followed by his Celebration of Life at 10:30 am.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Steve’s honor to the Parkinson’s Foundation or the Penn Medicine Hospice.
