Stanley Johnson, 91, a native of West Chester got his wings on March 26th, 2023. He passed away peacefully at The Hickman, his home for the past 4 years, with his daughter Becky, and other family and friends by his side.
Stanley was born on October 3rd, 1931. He was the third of 4 children to Leonard and Katherine Johnson. He was preceded in death by his wife Diane L. Johnson; his siblings James Johnson and Marylou Evans; his son Stanley Johnson Jr., and his grandson Adam Johnson.
He is survived by his youngest brother Allan Johnson (often thought to be his twin); his sister-in-law Shirley Johnson (wife of James); his sisters-in-law Ruth Springer and Dottie Lewis; his daughter-in-law Marijean Johnson; his daughter Becky Lindeman and son-in-law John Lindeman; his grandchildren–his pride and joy–Noah, Maura, Emma, and Jeanne; and his great grandson Greyson. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.
Stan was a 1949 graduate of West Chester High School. He enjoyed performing in school plays and speaking contests as well as competing in the hurdles on the track team. Aside from his service in the Navy in San Diego and North Africa, Stan lived his entire life in West Chester. He made many friends throughout his 60 years of serving the community as a store owner of Bartram’s Market and a manager at Nussex Farms. Upon his “retirement” he worked at Giunta’s Thriftway and then Pete’s Produce where he officially retired at age 82.
Stan was a lifelong Methodist belonging to the West Chester Methodist Church throughout his childhood, then Grove United Methodist Church upon meeting Diane. The two shared many happy moments together at Grove including weddings, baptisms, and their own 50th wedding anniversary celebration in 2018.
Singing was Stan’s favorite pastime. He sang in the 49ers for many years. He also sang in a small performing group called Music and in the church choir at times. He whistled a happy tune while working, gardening, and tinkering. If there was a song for your name, he sang it to you. The lovely staff at the Hickman enjoyed his serenades frequently.
Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate Stan’s life on Monday, May 15th, 2023 at 11AM at Grove United Methodist Church 490 W. Boot Road, West Chester PA.
Interment will follow at Grove Methodist Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for your donations to Grove United Methodist Church and/or The Hickman in West Chester.
