Obituary

Roxanne Johnson Shane, 90, of West Grove, Pennsylvania (formerly of Springfield, PA) passed away Thursday, May 29, 2025 surrounded by family. Born April 19, 1935 in Johnstown, PA, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Ethel York Johnson. She was the wife of Samuel W. Shane Jr. with whom she shared 62 loving years of marriage.

Roxanne was born in Johnstown, PA, and grew up in Pittsburgh. She graduated from Westminster College with a B.A. in History and Education.

She was proud of her work founding Art Goes to School, her involvement with League of Women's Voters, her active leadership roles at the First Presbyterian Church of Springfield, and the Springfield Women’s Club. She also enjoyed her years as a substitute teacher at the Richardson Middle School and later as a librarian at the Springfield Township library.

Roxanne never turned down a chance for adventure, taking flight early as a teenage pilot of single-engine aircrafts. That same passion carried through her life as she embraced hot air ballooning, bi-plane rides, sailing, hiking, skiing, and more.

In her retirement, Roxanne found joy in life’s simple pleasures and the company of those she loved most. She cherished time with her family, delighted in reading and travel, and was a regular at musical performances and Longwood Gardens. Summers in Ocean City, New Jersey held a special place in her heart. She enjoyed watching M*A*S*H reruns, sharing card games -whether as a skilled bridge player or competing with her children and grandchildren—and savoring a scoop of her favorite ice cream or a warm cup of coffee.

Roxanne lived a life grounded in her Christian faith. In recent years, she was a member at West Grove Methodist Church and an active resident at Jenners Pond, where she enjoyed walking the grounds and joining friends at dinner. She was endlessly gracious and never complained or had an unkind word to say about anyone.

She is survived by her son, Samuel (Mary) Shane; daughter, Suzanne (Gary) Taylor; son, Andrew (Paula) Shane; son, Paul (Jo-Lynne) Shane; and grandchildren, Christopher (Kristina), Patrick (Sarah), Shane (Courtney), Ali, Will, Brooke, Kyle, David, Caroline, and Rebecca; and great-grandchildren, Tyler, Fiona, Cecily, Cameron, and Nolan.

Relatives and friends are invited to the Memorial Service at 10:00 am on Friday, June 20th, at the Alison Community Center, Jenners Pond, 2000 Greenbriar Ln., West Grove, PA 19390. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Simpson Foundation (Note In Memory of Roxanne Shane on Memo please), 2000 Greenbriar Lane, West Grove, PA 19390.
