Raymond Andrew Doyle

Raymond Andrew Doyle, 85 of West Chester, PA and Ocean City, NJ passed away Thursday January 6, 2022 at his home in West Chester.

He was the husband of Ellen Snyder Doyle. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in October 2021.

On May 14, 1936, Ray was born in Philadelphia, PA to the late Andrew J. Doyle and the late Helen E. Gray Doyle. Raised in Philadelphia, he graduated from LaSalle College High School in 1954.

After serving in the Army, Ray graduated from West Chester State College with both an Undergraduate Degree and Master’s Degree in Education. In 1965, he started teaching as a college professor at his alma mater retiring in 1995. He finished his career as the Chairperson of the History Department.

In 1974, Ray co-wrote the 175th Anniversary booklet documenting the history of the Borough of West Chester through pictures and narratives.

For many years, he worked as a correspondent for the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Daily Local News. In 1978, he received a national award for best journalistic coverage of the Special Olympics.

After retirement, Ray was actively involved at the West Chester Senior Center where he taught classes in photography and art appreciation. He loved to document the many activities through photography for the center. His favorite times at the center were working with the children of Chester County Family Academy as part of the Grand Friends program.

However, Ray’s favorite times were spent with family especially his grandsons. He loved taking photographs of them as they grew up at home and at the shore.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Kathleen Hoertz and her husband, John, and grandsons, Michael, Stephen, and Thomas.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his honor to the West Chester University Foundation - Athletics or West Chester Area Senior Center.
