Obituary

Patrick J. O’Donnell Jr (Pat), beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed peacefully away on August 29, 2025 in his home. His death was the result of long-term health effects caused by exposure to Agent Orange during his service in the Vietnam War. Pat was born on October 7, 1947, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Patrick and Nancy O’Donnell. Pat lived a life marked by devotion—to his family, his country, and his community.

Pat shared more than 56 wonderful years of marriage with his high school sweetheart and best friend, Bernadette C. O’Donnell (Bunny). Together they built a family rooted in love, laughter, and strong values. He was the beloved father of Patrick (Christy) O’Donnell, William O’Donnell, and Katie (Bill) Whitmore. Nothing brought him greater joy than being “Pop-Pop” to his nine grandchildren—Cassie, Patrick, Colin, Jack, Will, Christopher, Grace, Julia, and Charlie—each of whom lit up his heart in a special way. Pat is also survived by his two brothers Michael and Andrew O’Donnell and preceded in death by his parents Nancy and Patrick O’Donnell, sister Nancy O’Donnell Caprara, brother Timothy O’Donnell, and sister Teresa O’Donnell Plummer.

A proud Marine, Pat bravely served his country during the Vietnam War from 1967-1968. Pat was honourably discharged with the Combat Infantryman’s Badge. Following his military service, he enjoyed a long and successful career with the Campbell Soup Company. His work included time at Mrs. Paul’s in Philadelphia and later as the plant manager at Pepperidge Farm in Downingtown. His work ethic, leadership, and integrity left a lasting mark on all who worked alongside him.

Pat was a graduate of Bishop Shanahan High School, where he was quarterback, and later graduated from West Chester University. His love for sports and teamwork carried into his adult life, where he enjoyed golf, cheering on his favorite Philadelphia teams, and spending time with his circle of dear friends.

Family vacations to Ocean City, Avalon, and Marco Island were some of Pat’s happiest times, where the sand, ocean breeze, and togetherness created memories cherished by all. In quieter moments, he found joy in the simple pleasures—washing cars to a shine, a round of golf on a sunny afternoon, and long conversations with those he loved.

Pat’s life was defined by love, loyalty, and laughter. He will be remembered not only for his strength and dedication but for the warmth, kindness, and humor he brought into every room. His legacy lives on in the hearts of his family, his friends, and all those who were blessed to know him.

A viewing will be held on Friday, September 5th from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. at Saints Philip and James Church, followed by a Funeral Mass at 12:00 p.m. Burial with Marine Corps honors will take place at St. Agnes Cemetery immediately following the Mass. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Tunnel to Towers Foundation and/or Camilla Hall.
