Norman Eavenson, Jr. Obituary

Norman R. Eavenson, Jr., 74 of West Chester, PA died Sunday November 14, 2021, at the Chester County Hospital in West Chester.

Born September 26, 1947 in West Chester, PA he was the son of the late Norman R. Eavenson, Sr. and the late Dorothy Jamison Eavenson.

Norm lived his entire life in West Chester. He was a 1965 graduate of West Chester High School, now Henderson High School. He received a BA in history from Gettysburg College in 1969 and a Master’s Degree in Political Science from Villanova University in 1972. He obtained his Pennsylvania teacher certification through Immaculata College.

From 1972-2005, Norm taught social studies in the Kennett Square School District.

Norm was a true Philadelphia sports fan. His special love of basketball led to working as a scout for Ben Gibbon All Star Sports Report, a basketball scouting service. Norm was a certified NCAA Talent Evaluator. He started his own basketball scouting service, Middle Atlantic Recruiting Services after retiring from teaching. His clients included 65 NCAA Division 1 Schools. Norm could be found at many high school basketball games and tournaments sitting in his “blue chair”, a retirement gift from his colleagues at Kenneth Square SD. He was a highly respected high school basketball talent advisor for many colleges. Norm was a reliable source for Philadelphia Inquirer and Washington Post sports reporters. Late in life Norm became fascinated by English Premier League Soccer and traveled to England to attend football matches in person.

Norm was a past president of the West Chester Adult Baseball League.

Norm was also a rock and roll music fan. He attended every Rolling Stones concert tour in the United States since 1965. He was a “Dead Head”. In 1969, he was on the way to Woodstock with friends, ticket in hand, but was deterred by the New York State Police from crossing into New York.

Norm avidly followed politics. In 1972 he attended his first national political convention and was a driver for the McGovern campaign in Miami. Thereafter Norm attended various Democratic National Conventions through 2016 and the 2000 Republican National Convention in Philadelphia. In 1977 he attended a Carter Inaugural Ball.  Norm collected mementos of those and other 20th and 21st century political campaigns. Norm was an active member of the American Political Items Collectors (APIC).
