Obituary

Dr. Mathias Kirchmer, 62, of West Chester, Pennsylvania, passed away unexpectedly on March 18, 2026.

Born on October 14, 1963, Mathias grew up in Siebeldingen, Germany, and remained closely connected to his family and heritage throughout his life. He later made his home in the United States, while continuing to maintain strong ties to Germany and to loved ones around the world.

Mathias was an accomplished scholar and internationally respected business leader. He earned a diploma in Industrial Engineering and Management from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, a Master of Economics from Université Paris Dauphine, and a doctorate in Information Systems from Saarland University. He was proud of his academic work, his teaching at leading American and international universities, and the eleven books he authored in the field of Business Process Management.

Over the course of a distinguished career, Mathias became a leading expert in Business Process Management and digital transformation. He joined IDS Scheer in 1990 and was crucial in building the company’s presence in the United States while opening additional markets. He later held a leadership role at Accenture before co-founding BPM-D with his longtime friend and colleague Peter Franz. Together they built a successful international company with offices in the United States, the United Kingdom, and India. Following the acquisition of BPM-D US by the Scheer Group in 2023, the business continued as Scheer IDS Americas under Mathias’ leadership.

Mathias was admired not only for his professional achievements, but also for his warmth, intelligence, and love of life. He was passionate about a wide range of pursuits, including jazz, pop art, fine dining, cooking, travel, technology, snorkeling, classic films, and soccer. He played the piano, co-produced jazz albums, co-owned Vincent’s, a beloved former restaurant and jazz club in downtown West Chester, collected vibrant pop art, and formed lasting friendships with artists and musicians. He loved welcoming friends and family into the homes he and Monica created in West Chester and Vieques, Puerto Rico, a place especially dear to him. Mathias had a gift for making life more colorful: through his unmistakable laugh, his striking suits, his enthusiasm for beauty in all forms, and his delight in sharing memorable experiences with others.

He will be remembered as a beloved husband, son, brother, uncle, mentor, colleague, and friend. Always generous, loyal, compassionate, with a positive attitude and full of laughter.

Mathias is survived by his loving wife, Monica; his mother, Helge; his sister, Ute and his brother-in-law, Jens; his niece, Amelie and her fiancé, Marco; his nephew, Nils; and extended family in Germany and Chile, including his father-in-law, Andrés. He was predeceased by his father, Paul.

A viewing will be held on Friday, March 27, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at DellaVecchia, Reilly, Smith & Boyd Funeral Home, West Chester. On Saturday, March 28, visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by the memorial service at 11:00 a.m. at St. Agnes Church in West Chester. Live Streaming will be available Here. Appropriate attire is requested, and all who wish to honor Mathias and celebrate his life are warmly welcome.
