Mary Susan Crickman

Mary Susan Crickman of West Chester, PA passed away Monday, March 10, 2025 at The Hickman in West Chester. She was 88 years old.

Susan, the wife of the late Charles William Crickman, was born June 16, 1936 in Takoma Park, MD.  She was the daughter of the late William Carden McHenry and the late Helvi Hakala McHenry. Susan was very proud of her Finnish heritage and spent many summers during her childhood visiting her Finnish relatives in Mass, MI.

Susan spent most of her life in the Washington DC area and graduated from Roosevelt High School as the valedictorian of her class. She continued her education at Oberlin College before earning her bachelor’s degree from American University. She later earned a master’s degree in library science at the University of Maryland.

Susan dedicated much of her life to her work as a librarian at Little Falls Public Library in Montgomery County, Maryland. She had a deep love for reading and enjoyed solving jigsaw puzzles. Above all, she cherished nurturing and spending time with her family. The whole family spent many happy vacations on Ledge Pond in New Hampshire.

After Susan and Charles retired, they moved permanently to New Hampshire and she continued her vocation as a volunteer at the Newbury Public Library.  After Charles died, she moved to The Hickman in Pennsylvania to be closer to family.

She is survived by her son, Peter (Grace) Crickman, daughter, Nancy (John) Crickman, son, Kenneth (Chrysa) Crickman; grandchildren, Katie (Mark), Luke (Liz), Dani (Rob), Steven, Genni and Charlie; and great-grandchildren, Mabel and Murray.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Helen Margaret Seidman.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, March 16th at 1pm at the Swarthmore Friends Meeting.
