Marilyn Horne Obituary

Marilyn Smith Horne, 90, of West Chester, PA passed away peacefully on January 15, 2024 in her home at The Hickman where she received loving care.  She was the loving wife of the late Robert B. Horne for 65 years. Born on October 16, 1933 in Chester, PA. Marilyn was predeceased by her parents, Benton Pilgrim Smith and Dorothy Fencil Smith and her sister Elizabeth Joan Haddock.

Marilyn and her family lived in Springfield (Delaware County), PA, until 1984 when they moved to Chester County.  Marilyn graduated from Lansdowne High School in 1951.  She attended the University of Delaware where she met her husband and received her bachelor’s degree in early childhood education.  After graduating in 1955, Marilyn taught kindergarten for a few years before becoming a full-time mom and homemaker.  After her children were grown, she worked part-time in retail.

Marilyn devoted her life to being a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt to her loving family. She is survived by her sister, Ann Snyder; her children, Allison Horne, Barbara Horne Williamson (Ron), and David Jackson Horne (Meredith), all of West Chester; six grandchildren, Ryan Spera Williamson (Laura), Morgan Joan Williamson, Ethan Robert Williamson, Andrew Jackson Horne, Jason Bricker Horne, Kellan Dorothy Williamson, and her sweet great-grandchildren, Waylon Spera Williamson and Collins Michelle Williamson.

Marilyn was known for her kind, compassionate, loving personality as well as her ongoing enthusiasm for learning new hobbies. She loved creating handstitched and machine sewn projects and crafts. She enthusiastically picked up and learned new activities such as sailing, tennis, and golf which would be enjoyed beside her husband, children, and grandchildren. In retirement, she and Bob enjoyed taking clipper ship cruises around the world. Many winters were spent in St. Maarten while summer travels took them out west to enjoy Dad’s model train hobby at numerous Northern Pacific Railroad conventions.

Perhaps Marilyn’s most meaningful legacy was the love of her family’s summer home in Kentmore Park, Maryland. For almost 90 years, summers were spent on her beloved Sassafras River which she claimed had the “best sunset on the earth”. The original small cottage where Marilyn learned and passed on many family traditions, has since grown into a multigenerational home where traditions continue to be treasured and enthusiastically maintained by her beloved children and grandchildren. Summers continue to be filled with swimming, crabbing, sailing, along with hours of card-playing, and delicious meals around her family table.
