Marie Elaine Hickox Monaghan Obituary

Marie Elaine Hickox Monaghan passed away peacefully in the late afternoon hours on Monday, September 28th, 2020 at home in West Chester.

She was the wife of Timothy P. Monaghan and mother of Sean P. Monaghan and Patrick R. Monaghan.

Marie was born on August 28th, 1957 in Johnson City New, York. The daughter of the late Willard A. Hickox and Lucille Darrow Hickox. She adored her parents calling their relationship a true love story.

Marie grew up in Great Bend, Pennsylvania a very small town that she loved. Her face always lit up with joy and a smile when she spoke about Great Bend. She loved how peaceful and safe it was. Marie even had a pet duck who once walked with her to Sunday school. She fondly remembered her parents giving her change to get fudge at the local church that had sales. Marie loved riding her bike, ice skating, playing in the snow at her house, going for Sunday rides with her family, swimming and stopping at the ice cream store for fresh ice cream. Marie loved her Uncle Ken too... he had a farmhouse in New York and she loved to go swimming there. When the lake would freeze, Uncle Ken would pull her and her sister on a sled. Life was simple and simple was good.

When she was eight, Marie and her family moved to West Chester, Pennsylvania. This move was very difficult for her, she loved Great Bend. Growing up Marie enjoyed being with her friends, talking, writing notes and passing them to each other in class or on the bus. In 6th grade she was voted most likely to become a comedian. Marie loved the show Dark Shadows. She enjoyed staying home and quiet nights. Marie dabbled with writing poetry and liked to draw landscapes with pencils and water-colors and listening to music in her bedroom. Marie graduated from Henderson High School in 1975.

After High School graduation, Marie embraced being a young working adult. She worked hard and enjoyed life while sticking to her strong core values. As the seasons changed and years passed, Marie got married and discovered what made her truly happiest: having and raising children. Marie took great pride in being a loving, patient and compassionate mother. She never missed an important moment and was always there if you needed her. She loved being a grandmother to her only grandchild Aidan as well. Her favorite hobbies were reading books, often traditional romance books, laughing, cooking, especially mom and pop type stuff, gardening, driving around, going to yard sales, listening to the rain, watching the snow fall and spending time with her friends, family and dogs. Some of her favorite places she traveled to include Bermuda, Hawaii, Disney World in Florida and a restaurant called Nauti Goose on the Chesapeake Bay in North East Maryland. She said she wanted to be remembered as a kind, loving, funny human being who would really go out of her way to help anyone and not expect anything in return.

She is survived by her husband, Timothy P. Monaghan, son’s Sean P. Monaghan and Patrick R. Monaghan, grandson Aidan P. Monaghan, Sister Karen Dell’Aringa (Dave) and great nieces and nephews.
