Marie Chelly Gregg
December 25, 1943 – August 7, 2025
Marie Chelly Gregg, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and treasured friend, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family. Born on Christmas Day, December 25, 1943, in Kentucky, Marie was a gift from the very beginning. She was the daughter of LaVerne Redman Chelly and Irvan V.P. Chelly, and her life was a reflection of the warmth and joy of the season she was born into.
Marie was raised in Delaware and graduated from Brandywine High School in Wilmington before earning her degree in education from the University of Delaware. She went on to have a meaningful and fulfilling career as an elementary school teacher. Her nurturing spirit, patience, and love for children left a lasting impression on countless students and families throughout the years.
On November 27, 1965, Marie married the love of her life, James G. Gregg. Together they shared a beautiful life and were just months away from celebrating 60 years of marriage. Early in their life together, they moved to Camden, South Carolina, where they built a home full of laughter, warmth, and enduring friendships.
Marie was the heart and soul of her family. She was a devoted and loving mother to her daughters Anne and Lisa, and a proud grandmother to Taylor, Sean, Courtney, Kate, and Erin. Marie was also blessed to meet and cherish her great-grandson, James.
Even in the face of numerous medical challenges, Marie never lost her radiant positivity. Her strength, grace, and resilience were an inspiration to all who knew her. She never complained— instead, she lifted others with her sense of humor, gentle wisdom, and unfailing optimism. Her love was a constant, steady force that anchored her family through every chapter of life.
Marie cherished nothing more than spending time with her family and friends. She was the true matriarch—loving, nurturing, and fiercely devoted. Holidays were especially meaningful to her, and Christmas held a special place in her heart. From her beautifully wrapped gifts to her thoughtful traditions, she had a way of making everyone feel valued and deeply loved.
Marie’s legacy is one of unconditional love, quiet strength, and boundless generosity. Her absence leaves a space that cannot be filled, but her spirit will continue to guide and comfort those she loved so deeply.
She is survived by her husband Jim, her daughters Anne Gordon (Joe) and Lisa Kitchen (Jeff), her grandchildren Taylor Howe (Eric), Sean Gordon (Caitlin), Courtney Honig (Max), Kate Mulhern (Nate), and Erin Gordon, and her great-grandson James, and her sisters, Micki Shelley (Michael), and Pam Waters.
Instead of traditional black, let’s honor Marie’s life by wearing vibrant, colorful outfits that reflect the joy and light she brought into our lives.
