Joseph Richard Walsh, known affectionately as Joe to his friends and family and JoePa to his grandchildren, passed away peacefully on January 27, 2026, at his home in West Chester, PA. Born on February 5, 1950, in Philadelphia, PA, Joe's zest for life, love of sports, and dedication to the education of young people marked his 75 years of remarkable achievements and enduring relationships.
A graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Levittown, PA, Joe's athletic prowess was evident early on. He lettered in three sports (football, wrestling, and track) in high school and was voted first team center on the All-County Football Team. His passion for sports and learning continued at West Chester University, where he earned a B.S. in Health and Physical Education in 1972. At West Chester, he was the center and acknowledged leader on two Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship football teams.
Joe's professional life was as rich and inspiring as his time on the football field. He had a 36-year career as a Health and Physical Education teacher at West Chester Henderson High School. Joe's commitment to coaching was unparalleled: he served as the head football coach, assistant football coach, assistant wrestling coach, head wrestling coach, assistant boys’ lacrosse coach, and when the need arose, tennis coach and girls’ lacrosse coach.
In 1988, Joe became head football coach at Sun Valley High School in Aston, PA. His four-year tenure was marked by a Del-Val League Championship in 1990. For that accomplishment he was named Del-Val League Coach of the Year. Returning to Henderson as head football coach in 1992, he led the Warriors to three Ches-Mont League titles in 2003, 2007, and 2011, and significant playoff victories, which included becoming District I runner-up in 2007. He was a three-time Ches-Mont Coach of the Year and four-time Chester County Coach of the Year. He coached in the Chester County Valor Bowl for thirteen years, five as head coach and was an assistant coach in the Pennsylvania High School East/West All Star Game in 2009. He continued coaching at Henderson until 2011.
Returning to his alma mater after retiring from teaching, Joe served as defensive line coach at West Chester University from 2013-2020. He earned his third Pennsylvania State College Championship while a coach there.
Joe was inducted into the West Chester University Killinger Football Hall of Fame in 2001. He served on the Killinger Board of Directors and is a past president of that organization. He was inducted into the Pennsylvania Scholastic Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2014, the Ches-Mont League Hall of Fame in 2018, and the Chester County Sports Hall of Fame in 2025. He received the West Chester University Distinguished Alumni Award in 2021.
Away from the whistle and playbook, Joe found joy in family, fishing, and Philadelphia sports fandom. He enjoyed vacations at the shore, the tranquility of surf fishing, and the excitement of supporting his grandchildren in their various activities. His handyman skills were legendary - he was always ready to build, fix and improve anything around the house.
Joe will be remembered as a loving, kind, and thoughtful man. He made a lasting impact on the people he met. As a center in his playing days, he was the anchor of the offensive line. His talent as a unifying force characterized his teaching and coaching career as well, where he was known for his steady hand and skill at instilling a team-first attitude. And at home Joe worked with his wife Pam to provide a solid foundation on which his children could grow and thrive. For his grandchildren, Joe was the patient mentor and constant presence on the sidelines.
Joe was predeceased by his parents William J. Walsh, Jr. and Virginia Haman Walsh. He is survived by his loving wife Pam, his children Joseph (Nichole Smith). Kelly Moy (Robert), and Jennifer Rowe (Todd), and his grandchildren Emily (David), Seamus, Carter, Callie, Robby, Campbell, and Rose, and great-granddaughter Austin. He is also survived by his brother Russell (Cynthia Mershon), and sisters Ruth Ann Molnar, The Reverand Eileen P. Walsh (Susan Pederson) and sisters-in-law Patty Biffen, Penny Brinton (Mike), as well as many nieces and nephews.
