Obituary

Joseph G. Mitchell passed away peacefully at home on June 28th, surrounded by family, after a brief illness. He now joins his beloved wife, Margaret, who passed many years before him.

Joe proudly served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. After returning home, he met the love of his life, Margaret (Peg), and together they built a family through the adoption of their two children, Ada Marie and Shane Joseph. Joe was a man who believed in showing up—with strength, with love, and without hesitation.

He gave back to his community with the same quiet dedication he gave to his family. He volunteered for many years at Saints Peter and Paul Church, Chester County Hospital, and the Chester County Library. After Peg’s passing, he devoted much of his time to VFW Post 106 in West Chester, where he found friendship and purpose.

He is survived by his daughter, Ada Marie Nestor (née Mitchell), her husband G. Peter Nestor, and their children: Daylin, Gage, and Peter. Joe was a proud great-grandfather to Daylin’s son, Rhett, and grandfather-in-law to Daylin’s husband, Matt Lanshe. He is also survived by his son, Shane Joseph Mitchell, his wife Kate, and their sons, James Joseph (JJ) and Carter.

Joe was one of seven brothers. He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Dorothy, and brothers Thomas and James, and is survived by Frank, Bobby, Michael, and Kevin and many in laws, including his sister-in-law Jane Lippincott, who he maintained a close relationship with. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and cousins who loved him dearly.

To his family, Joe was more than a father and grandfather—he was Popie. Steady, kind, and loyal to the core, his greatest joy was time spent with his five grandchildren and great-grandson. His legacy lives on in all who knew and loved him.

Relatives and friends are invited to his visitation on Tuesday, July 8, 2025 from 9:30 am - 10:45 am at SS. Peter & Paul Church 1325 E. Boot Rd. West Chester, PA 19380, followed by his Funeral Mass at 11:00 am.
