Obituary

Joseph Michael Geraghty, 86, of West Chester, finished his long goodbye on December 9, 2025, in memory care at Barclay Friends, West Chester, PA.

Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara; two stepsons, Mark Taylor (Kim) and David Taylor (Cozette Cuppett); five grandchildren; and friends near and far.

Born in The Bronx, New York, to Peter and Mary Keane Geraghty, immigrants from Ireland, Joe was the youngest of five children. He was raised in the projects of Long Island City, where his time as an altar boy propelled him to Cathedral Preparatory School and Seminary in Brooklyn. At Cathedral, he met life-long friends – and decided to pursue higher education rather than the priesthood. Joe was the first in his family to earn a college degree, working his way through Iona College in New Rochelle, NY.

After graduating in 1962, Joe worked in sales, first selling coffee with Standard Brands, then migrating to computers with Control Data and Ketron Consulting, and ending in real estate.  His passion was in buying unfinished properties and managing final construction – always with a creative flair.

Joe used that flair while renovating his own home with Barbara. In 1996 they moved to a 18th century farmhouse in East Goshen Township, managing major changes inside and out. They saw themselves as stewards of the farmhouse, which had once also operated as a general store and post office. They lived there, happily hosting family get-togethers, until moving to West Chester borough because of Joe’s health.

Known for a smile that lit up his face, Joe was generous with his time and care. He provided a taxi service to folks in need whenever asked, stopped to converse with and help the homeless and disabled he met during his walks, and never met a dog that didn’t need a scratch or treat.

At his request, there will be no funeral service. A private celebration of his life will be arranged at the convenience of the family.

Contributions in Joe’s memory may be sent to Church of the Loving Shepherd.
