Obituary

John Funk, age 82, of Marshallton passed away June 2, 2025.  John died peacefully at home after a short battle with cancer.

John was born June 10, 1942, in the small town of Fries, Virginia.  John was the son of Charles and Belle Cox Funk.  He was preceded in death by his sisters Helen York (Ray), Patsy Moxley (Larry), Jane Ann Hudson (Robert), and Frankie Vaughan (Billie).  John also had a brother, Billy, that died as an infant.

After graduating from Fries High School, John joined the Air Force.  After his first deployment he returned home and eloped with the love of his life, Carol.  John always said of the early days that “they didn’t have a pot to piss in” but they scraped by and started a family.  After a few years stateside, John was stationed in Okinawa and fought in the Vietnam war.  John’s military career spanned 7 years.

After his military service, John worked multiple jobs supporting his family but was known for his position as a Center Manager for UPS. During his career, he developed lifelong friendships and also sold an enormous amount of Girl Scout Cookies along the way.  He was always there to support every fundraiser and cause.

John only had a few hobbies, but he was most passionate about classic cars.  Over the years, John had numerous 1st generation Camaro’s and was nicknamed “The Camaro Man”.  He truly loved driving them and talking to strangers that he met along the way about the cars.  After retirement, John took up golf and started to travel. He loved spending time with his family on cruises and taking his grandchildren to Disney.  His spare time was filled with his grandkid’s activities, he never missed an event or an opportunity to help in some way.  John also loved watching all sports, but his favorite teams were the Phillies and Eagles.  He was a huge fan of the Downingtown West Football and Band programs and continued to go to games long after his kids and grandchildren graduated.

In addition to his wife Carol of 63 years, John is survived by his children, Mark Funk (Patricia) of Lancaster and Cathy Haney of Downingtown, his grandchildren Caitlyn and Ryan Haney and step grandchildren Kyle and Kevin Troutman; sister-in-law Linda Lankin, nephews Josh and Ari Lankin, Brian and Derek Vaughan, Jeff Cecil, Jon Cox and nieces Anita Samis and Michele Davis.  John also leaves behind his beloved granddog “Chewy”.

John was known and loved by so many.  Everywhere he went, someone knew him and stopped to talk.   The family would love for everyone to share a memory, but John’s final wishes were for a small private family service.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to a Veterans Organization.
