Joanne Coughlin Graybill

Joanne Graybill, 81 of West Chester, PA, formerly of Oakland, MD, passed away Friday, August 28, 2026 at Barclay Friends in West Chester.

She was the wife of the late Thomas J. Graybill, to whom she was married for 58 years. 

Born April 8, 1945 in Easton, PA, she was the daughter of the late Joseph E. Coughlin and the late Freda Spitznagle Coughlin.

Joanne graduated from Notre Dame High School. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Bloomsburg University and later received her master’s degree from St. Louis University. She worked for the Carbon-Lehigh Intermediate Unit as a Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.  She moved to Oakland in 1976 and worked in various roles in special education for the Garrett County Schools.

She was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and for many years volunteered as a Red Cross swim instructor and was the coach for the Garrett County Manta Rays Swim Team throughout the 1980s until her retirement in 1997. Was a member of the Garrett Organization for the Handicapped and volunteered for Appalachian Crossroads.  She enjoyed reading, cooking, antiques, and attending many concerts and sporting events for her husband and grandchildren.

Joanne is survived by her two daughters, Alison Hefferan and her husband Michael, and Kerry Heinze and her husband Chris; six grandchildren, Kieran, Gavin, and Ronan Hefferan, Erin, Evan and Owen Heinze; her sister, Susan Bowlby; and her brother, David Coughlin.

Joanne was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.  She was a generous and tireless advocate for children and adults with special needs.  She will be greatly missed.

Services and Interment will be private.
