Obituary

Everett Joseph Cassel, affectionately known as Ev to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2026, at the age of 89. Born on July 18, 1936, in Philadelphia, PA, Ev was a man who lived a full and vibrant life, residing in West Chester, PA for most of his adult years.

Ev attended Upper Darby High School, graduating with the class of 1954. His commitment to service was evident early on as he joined the Air Force in 1956, dedicating four years to working with B-52 Bombers. Following his honorable discharge in 1960, Ev began a long and distinguished career at Sun Oil Company in Suntech's Applied Research and Development Department, where he remained for 34 years until his retirement in 1988.

His love for the outdoors was undeniable, with passions that included golf, skiing, racquetball, bicycling, and canoeing. Ev's sense of adventure took him on cycling journeys through 19 foreign countries, including an unforgettable 28-day tour across Europe. For 40 consecutive years, he enjoyed an annual pilgrimage to Myrtle Beach, where he played golf with the same group of cherished friends. Stone Harbor, New Jersey, held a special place in his heart, as it was the site of many joy-filled family vacations.

Ev was deeply committed to service and his community. He was an active member of The Chester County Historical Society and the West Goshen Lions Club. He generously volunteered with The American Red Cross during blood drives and helped monitor two sections of the Appalachian Trail in Pennsylvania. His dedication to youth and leadership was evident in the 14 years he served as a Boy Scout leader, hoping to positively shape the lives of young men.  He was also a longtime member of The First Methodist Church in West Chester.

Ev is predeceased by his beloved mother, Miriam Maxey; his father, Joseph Everett Cassel; his stepfather, Ray Maxey; and his brother, John Cassel.

He is survived by his wife, Lucina “Siney” Johnson (née Downes) whom he lovingly referred to as “Sunshine”; his two children; one grandson; four stepchildren, eight step-grandchildren; and fourteen step-great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy and pride to his life.

Ev will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, his dedication to his community, his deep love for his wife and country, and his boisterous laugh.
