Elizabeth “Betsy” Halsted Obituary

Elizabeth “Betsy” Barnes Halsted died peacefully at home in the company of her family on September 22, 2021.


Born in Pittsburgh, Pa in 1934 to Harry C. and Nancy R. Barnes she spent her youth in Swarthmore and West Chester Pa. After graduating from The Agnes Irwin School and Endicott College, she taught at the Booth School in Ithen Pa, after which she and husband John settled in Kennett Square, where she remained for the rest of her life.

Betsy’s passions included The Upland Country Day School and the West Chester Garden Club. She was a longtime member of the Chester County Hospital Auxiliary and served on the board of both the Chester County Hospital and the Kennett Symphony of Chester County.

Betsy is survived by her husband of 64 years, John Scarlett Halsted; children Beth Halsted (Kennet Square, Pa), Scarlett Carey and husband Bill (Lincoln, Ma), Jock Halsted and wife Denise (Columbus, Oh), Tom Halsted (Kennett Square, Pa); eight grandchildren and 2 great- grandchildren. Additionally, Betsy is survived by two sisters: Blyth Steere (Pittsburgh, Pa) and Judy Luke (Vero Beach, Fl) and her loving Yorkie Bichon “Dulce”.

Services and Interment will be private.
