Obituary

Edwin Alfred Crombie III, 76 of West Chester, PA passed away Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at his home in the loving care of his wife and three daughters. 

He was the husband of Kathleen B. Crombie. 

Born March 8, 1948, in Darby, PA, he was the son of the late Edwin Alfred Crombie Jr. and the late Margaret Jane Goritz Crombie. 

Ed grew up in Broomall, PA, and graduated from Marple Newtown High School. He went on to receive his Masters in Material Science from Drexel University. Ed played and received scholarships for multiple sports including football, basketball, and baseball, and was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. 

Ed began his career as a metallurgist at Westinghouse for nearly 20 years, where his father worked, introducing innovative metallurgical concepts to advanced aerospace and land-based turbine design for companies around the world. He went on to become the Manager of Materials and New Product Development for Johnson Matthey for 25 years. He was the inventor of several U.S. patents for metal and biomedical-based alloys and the recipient of several Excellence in Achievement awards throughout his career. 

Ed enjoyed golfing, corvettes, gardening, and attending his grandson’s sporting events. He could be found reading a book at the pool or beach, walking the dog, or working on projects around the house. Ed loved being with his family and celebrating holidays, especially Christmas. 

In addition to his wife, Kathy, Ed is survived by his daughter, Kara Anne Crombie, daughter, Aimee Crombie (Michael) Speerschneider, daughter, Kathleen Jane Crombie; grandchildren, Miles Speerschneider and Levi Speerschneider; sister, Margaret Jane (Scott) Little. 

He was preceded in death by grandson, Cade Speerschneider. 

Relatives and friends are invited to his visitation on Wednesday, July 24, 2024 from 10:00 am - 10:45 am at DellaVecchia, Reilly, Smith & Boyd Funeral Home, Inc. 410 North Church Street West Chester, PA 19380, followed by his Funeral Service at 11:00 am. 

Interment will be private. 

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN)
