Obituary

Charles W. (Charlie) Tomlinson passed away Saturday, January, 25.

Charlie was born and raised in West Chester, PA, where his paternal and maternal families resided. He graduated from Henderson High School.

From his high school years, Charlie had an interest in communications, especially broadcast communications.  He was accepted into Temple University, where he studied at the School Of Communications (now Klein School). He specialized in broadcasting but made sure prior to graduation that he studied all forms of mass communications.

His first job, during his college years, was at a small radio station in northern Chester County.  Later, still during college, he worked at WCOJ Radio in Coatesville, PA and WCHE Radio in West Chester. After a short interlude, following college graduation, as communications specialist with the West Chester Area School District, he returned to WCHE as general manager. During that time, he was very involved in the Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce, where he later became chairman, in the Exchange Club of West Chester, and in the West Chester BPOE #853 Elks lodge, where he rose to Exalted Ruler.

Charlie moved his career to WJBR 99.5 in Wilmington, DE, where he spent 10 years as general sales manager.  He was invited to join a new management company for the emerging Winner Automotive Group in 1984 as director of advertising. Ten years later, he joined Delaware Today Magazine as director of sales and marketing. While performing in that capacity, Charlie helped the company launch Main Line Today Magazine in 1996.

He returned to the Winner Automotive Group in 1999, this time as director of marketing.  Charlie went on in 2006 to spend a year in business development with Northlight Advertising in Exton, PA. That was followed by a director of marketing tenure with NuCar Auto Group in New Castle, DE.

Just prior to the economic crash of 2008, Charlie re-joined what is now Today Media as associate publisher of Delaware Today.  He went on to serve as vice president of business development for Today Media, including its custom publishing division.

Charlie had served as chairman of Chester County Chamber of Commerce Association, board member of Chester County Tourist Promotion Bureau (predecessor to today’s  Chester County Convention & Visitors Bureau), board member of the Philadelphia Ad Club, board member of the Brandywine Chapter of the Pennsylvania Restaurant & Lodging Association, and board member of the Main Line Chamber of Commerce.  He served as board chair for the World Trade Center Delaware.  He was also active in Committee of 100 and Commercial – Industrial Real Estate Council.  He was also a member of the Broadcast Pioneers.

Charlie was faithful to his religion and a member of St. Agnes Parish in West Chester, PA.

When he died, he was still with Today Media.

Not only was he a gentleman, he was a gentle man.

Charlie was preceded in death by a son in 1992, Alan, and by his parents, Charles, Sr. and Kathryn.  He is survived by his wife Carol and daughter Christie Moretti.

Family and friends are invited to the visitation at St. Agnes Parish, 233 W. Gay Street, West Chester, PA, on Monday, February 3, 2025 from 9AM -10:45AM.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11AM, immediately followed by entombment at Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery in Springfield, PA.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to MDS Foundation, Inc.
