Anthony James Pappas, of West Chester, PA, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2025, at the age of 95.
Born on January 27, 1930, in Thompsonville, CT, he was the son of the late Dimitri and Eleni (Sarelli) Pappas. Anthony enlisted in the U.S. Navy in October 1948 and served aboard the medical ship USS Consolation during the Korean War.
Following his honorable discharge, he pursued higher education through the GI Bill, earning a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and biology from American International College in Springfield, MA. He later attended Hahnemann College in Philadelphia.
In 1960, Anthony began his teaching career as a chemistry instructor at Valley Forge Military Academy. Soon after, he married his beloved wife, Anastasia Valldes of Lancaster, PA. He went on to teach in the Downingtown Area School District until his retirement, leaving a lasting impact on his students and colleagues.
A member of Saint Luke’s Greek Orthodox Church and the local AHEPA chapter, he remained connected to his faith and Greek heritage throughout his life.
Anthony was a devoted father to Elaina Johnson (Ed), Dimitri Pappas (Annette), Stacy D’Agostino, and Jason Pappas (Christy). He cherished his family, including his 14 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, who brought him immense joy. He is also survived by a brother Dr. Gus Pappas, and was predeceased by his sister, Effie King of Enfield, CT
A man of many passions, he loved gardening, woodworking, and reading about history and his Greek heritage. His family eagerly anticipated his annual homemade holiday decorations, a tradition that showcased his creativity and warmth.
Relatives and friends are invited to his visitation on Friday April 11, 2025 from 10-10:45 at the St. Luke Greek Orthodox Church, 35 N. Malin Road Broomall PA followed by his Funeral Mass at 11am. Interment will follow in the Philadelphia Memorial Park, Frazer PA.
