Andrew Shaw

Andrew Shaw, 79 of Southern Chester County, PA passed away Sunday, February 1, 2026 at Paoli Hospital.

He was the husband of Audrey V. Thompson (Worth).

Born August 28, 1946 in Stockport, Cheshire, UK, he was the son of the late William Shaw and the late Irene Calvert Shaw.

Andrew grew up in Manchester, England and graduated from Poundswick Grammar School, where he was captain of the rugby team and Head Boy.  He received his bachelor’s degree and his Ph.D (chemistry) from the University of Cambridge.  After completing post-doctorate work at Yale University, he returned to Cambridge as a Fellow at Clare College.

He worked as a research chemist in the medicinal chemistry department of ICI (Imperial Chemical Industries) in the UK before being transferred with his young family to Wilmington, DE in 1979. There, he was a section manager of the department, which split off into Zeneca, Inc., later becoming AstraZeneca. His team’s work led to drug discoveries in hypertension, arthritis, emphysema, and asthma. He retired in 2007.

Andrew was a member of Radley Run Country Club from 1979, where he excelled in tennis and golf.  He also played squash at the Wilmington Racquet Club, at one time being the Delaware State “B” Champion.

He loved birdwatching, music, photography, reading, travel, and wine. He was a true Renaissance man, who was loved by all who knew him for his quick wit and kind heart. 

In addition to his wife Audrey, Andrew is survived by his two daughters, Naomi Caldwell (David) and Lindsey Nicholson (James), his five grandchildren: Harrison, Nicholas, and Aidan Caldwell and Luke and Kelsey Nicholson, and his sister, Susan Rayner, as well as by nephews and nieces in the UK. He was preceded in death by his sister Nina Farrow.   

A Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday, February 10th at 4pm at the Mansion House at Radley Run Country Club.  Refreshments and hors d’oeuvres will be provided.  Please bring your stories and remembrances.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to The National Audubon Society in Andrew's name.
