Andrew Mongar Obituary

Andrew Lawrence Mongar, 71, passed away following a tragic tree-felling accident on Sunday, October 7, 2018.

Andrew was born on October 31, 1946, in Hammersmith, London, to Jack and Phyllis. He will be remembered with deep love by his mother Phyllis, his wife Susan, and children, Robert (Jo Anne), David (Sarah), and Steffie (Ben); his sister, Sue, brother, Rich and niece Yasmine. He also leaves behind stepdaughters, Julie (Jonathan) and Mattie (Anthony) and four grandsons, Henry, Charlie, Jack, and Elliot. His faithful hound and uncorroborated Newfie, Mischa, mourns his absence.

Andrew was the quintessential Renaissance man, with a storied career spanning from morgue orderly to international business professor, and from West End stage manager to founder and president of AirGreen, a revolutionary AC technology company whose capable management team will continue to develop to marketability. A passionate sailor, he began building sailboats at age seven with his father. Among his other loves are the renovation of historical homes, jazz, theatre, and rescuing the tarnished reputation of fruitcake in North America.

He will be remembered for the phrases: “Blast!” “Bugger!” and “What’s for pudding?”

Although his default mode was complaint, he had recently been thrilled with the success of his kids and the latest addition to the Mongar family, his grandson, Scotty. He left in the midst of a final act of service, removing a tree at risk for dropping branches on people, despite his wife’s protestations to leave well enough alone. He was outside, and using his hands, which is how he will be remembered best, excepting, perhaps, his interminable Tom Lehrer interpretations.

Andrew was an avid environmentalist and in lieu of flowers, we would be grateful for donations to be made to the Environmental Defense Fund https://www.edf.org/ or the Imperial College Foundation https://www.justgiving.com/imperialcollegefoundationinc in his honor.
