Alvy L. Kelly, 90 of West Chester, PA died Wednesday, August 30, 2023, at Chester County Hospital in West Chester.
Born January 27, 1933, in West Chester, PA he was the son of the late Bruce Kelly and the late Pauline Walton Kelly.
He was the husband of the late Adelyene I. Kelly (Izzi)
Alvy, also known as Al, was a life-long resident of West Chester and attended West Chester High School. He enlisted with the United States Air Force and served in the Korean War with the rank of Sergeant. Upon his honorable discharge he began working for Burroughs Corp in the Defense and Space Missile Division. He helped install the 1st Atlas Missile site at Cape Canaveral.
In 1972 along with his wife Addy, he established Kelly’s Sports, Ltd. in the Parkway Shopping Center, West Chester and as co-owner held the office of president until his retirement in 1995. They expanded a second store in the New Garden shopping center, Kennett Square in 1980, with their son Steve taking the office of Vice-President. Kelly’s consolidated into one store at the 202 by-pass and Matlack Street in 1985 and expanded their business focusing on Team Sports. He over saw over 50 employees and have sponsored approximately 50 youth and adult sports teams per year.
Alvy had a passion for serving the community. His many contributions to the Community began in 1956 when he engineered the rearranging of Green Field to a Softball/Football field which is used by thousands of community residents every year. He also designed and installed light there for night play.
Upon seeing a group of kids playing unsupervised football without equipment he founded the Little All-American Football League (LAFA). He also coached ten years of East Side Little League Baseball. Ever looking to fill a need in the Community Al also donated and installed lights at the West Chester Community Center. When he saw the basketball courts in such disrepair, he also replaced the basketball poles and backboard and put macadam on the surface of the basketball and tennis courts. He also donated two basketball backboard and volleyball standards to the West Goshen Community Park.
Alvy and his wife Addy, formed the West Chester Area Sports Association, whose purpose was to build a five-field sports complex for the youth and adults of the West Chester community. At any given time, you can see the residents of Chester County actively participating in different Sports on the fields off Route 202 and Westtown Road.
Alvy and Addy with Kelly’s Sports formed a relationship with West Chester State College. They restored Hollinger Field House by installing fifteen cases to display over 500 refurbished trophies found in a third-floor attic. They also renovated a room off the basketball court and dedicated it as the Roberts W. Reese Memorabilia Room. They were yearly donors to the Presidential Scholarship award and Capital Campaign for the installation of an Astro-turf field. Upon the loss of his wife/business partner and the Love of his life. Al started a scholarship fund in her memory at West Chester University named the Addy Kelly Memorial Scholarship.
As a result of Alvy’s passion for giving freely to the West Chester Community he was honored with many Awards and Presentations which include: The Little All American Football Association (LAFA) 25th Anniversary Commissioners award for outstanding service and dedication for founding the league, West Chester University Golden Rams Club President’s award, West Chester University Baseball Distinguished Service Award, West Chester University Presidential Medallion award, West Chester University Killinger Football Foundation President award, West Chester University Hollinger Field House Foyer dedicated to Al and Addy Kelly. He was bestowed as honorary alumnae member of West Chester University, Received the Greater West Chester Sunrise Rotary Club Vocational award for outstanding service to the West Chester Community, West Chester University citation for outstanding service to the Golden Rams Football Team for erecting two observation towers, West Chester University President’s award for outstanding donor leadership and volunteer service, National Youth Sports Program Humanitarian Award from Cheyney University, Senatorial Citation for 25 years in business from Senator Robert Thompson, Four Chaplains Legion of Honor Award, Rotary Club of West Chester Community Service Award, Cheyney University Living Legend Award, PA State Eberly Award for Volunteerism through West Chester University, Testimonial Dinner given by the Italian Social Club – Citations given by Senator Robert Thompson, Representative Elinor Taylor, Commissioner Andy Dinniman. Mayor Clifford DeBaptiste named Sunday, February 4th Alvy Kelly Day.
Alvy’s hobbies included hunting, fishing, and restoring authentic military Army, Navy, Marine and Airforce jeeps to represent their presence in the War.
Alvy is survived by his children Karen Cassidy (Jack), Doreen Kelly, Steven Kelly (Donna); sibling Betty Gincley; grandchildren John Malacinski, Shawn Cassidy, Steven Kelly Jr., Matthew Kelly and Kara Miller; and great grandchildren Aaron Kelly, Grace Kelly, Audrey Kelly, Sophie Miller, Vivian Miller and Madison Miller.
He was preceded in death by brother Wilbur Kelly
Relatives and friends are invited to his visitations on Monday, September 11, 2023 from 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm at DellaVecchia, Reilly, Smith & Boyd Funeral Home, Inc. 410 North Church Street West Chester, PA 19380, and on Tuesday, September 12, 2023 from 9:00 am - 9:45 am at St. Agnes Church; 233 W. Gay St. West Chester, PA 19380; followed by his Funeral Mass at 10:00 am.
Interment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery West Chester, PA
