Allen H. Lankin, 80, of West Chester, PA, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, June 16, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones. Allen lived a life marked by unwavering dedication to his family, his work, and his community, embodying the philosophy of doing more and saying less.
He and Linda Cox Lankin were married in 1975 and were happily married for 48 years prior to his passing. Together, they raised two children, Josh and Ari, instilling in them the values of kindness, perseverance, and integrity. Allen was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was always present to support school, sports, and any other activities.
Born in 1943, in Philadelphia, PA, Allen was one of two children born to Louis Lankin, a Jewish immigrant from Russia (now Ukraine), and Ethel Mintz Lankin, daughter to Jewish immigrants from Poland. He grew up in the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood of Philadelphia and graduated from Central High School (Class 216). At Central, Allen ran cross country and tutored classmates in math and Spanish. He was an accomplished speed reader and an active participant in the Student Service Committee.
Allen funded his own education working odd jobs. He earned a degree in Mathematics with honors from Temple University, where he was a member of the Mathematics Honor Society.
After graduation, Allen completed Parts I and II of the Society of Actuaries entry examinations. He then proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged after fulfilling his commitment. Choosing to pursue a career in computer programming rather than actuarial science, Allen explained that he didn’t want to put a price on someone’s life. He worked as a computer consultant and eventually ran his own business, Brill Associates.
His principles always guided his actions, leading him to help others and take the moral high road. In his retirement he dedicated his time to volunteering at numerous organizations and tutoring ESL students. He enjoyed performing mitzvot, playing recreational sports, eating a charred steak, following Philadelphia sports teams, listening to Frank Sinatra, doing crossword puzzles, reading, and donating to a wide variety of charities.
Allen will be remembered for his sharp intellect, quick wit, compassion, and the profound impact he had on his family and community. His legacy of integrity, kindness, dedication to service and warm smile will continue to inspire all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to Kesher Israel Congregation in West Chester, PA, where Allen was an active and devoted member of the Congregation for over 50 years.
In addition to his wife, Linda, Allen is survived by his brother, Steve; his children, Josh (Thalia) and Ari (Victoria); and his grandchildren, Ethan and Julia.
