Walter Raymond Nagel Obituary

Walter Raymond Nagel, beloved husband, father and grandfather died Friday November 29, 2019 at his home.

Walt was born in Nutley, NJ in 1931. His late parents were John and Elizabeth Roth (Nagel). He was preceded in death by his brother, John Jr.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Carol Gilbert Nagel whom he met and married while living and working in Charleston, West Virginia; his four children; Sharon Ann and husband Mark, Christopher Andrew Nagel, Daniel Ethan Nagel and wife Tracy, and Emily Carol and husband, Bob Keefe; seven grandchildren, Sam Urban, Cole Nagel, Arden Nagel, Michael Nagel, Julia Nagel, Claire Keefe and Jack Keefe.

Walt graduated from Stevens Institute in Engineering and received his Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering from Carnegie-Mellon.

He was an elder in the Presbyterian Church and has been a member of West Chester United Methodist Church for 23 years. Here he served as the pastoral care coordinator for several years. During his years in West Virginia he was involved in the ministries of Trinity United Methodist Church and Lakeview United Methodist.

He was employed as an engineer by Union Carbide, Sinclair-Coppers (ARCO) and retired from Sartomer. He is responsible for some patents in the chemical industry.

Walt was never happier than when he was working in the yard. His flowers, shrubs and trees racked up a lot of mileage as he moved them about the property. His faith was strong and brought him grace and peace during these months with mesothelioma.  In these latter years, family gatherings and little Lucy, the family dog brought him joy and much laughter. He recently finished writing a book he had worked on for years, a theological piece, The Seven Year Miracle, which will soon be published.

There will be a private family service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Brandywine Valley SPCA in West Chester 1212 Phoenixville Pike West Chester, PA 19
