Louis Scarfo, Jr. Obituary

Louis Scarfo, Jr., 75, formerly of West Chester, PA, died peacefully on January 7, 2019, at the Floyd E. Fann Veterans Home in Huntsville, AL, following a lengthy illness with Lewy Body dementia.

He was the fourth child born to the late Louis Scarfo, Sr. and Catherine Tricomi Scarfo of West Chester, PA.  Lou graduated from West Chester Area High School in 1961, where he participated in football, wrestling, and cross country.

He enlisted in the United States Army.  Following active duty in the U.S. Army, he was employed by Wyeth Laboratories in West Chester for 18 years.  After working for Wyeth, he was the President/Owner of Scarfo Landscaping Co. in West Chester, where his care for many commercial properties in the area was easily recognized by the meticulous attention to detail and by the colorful landscapes he and his wife created.  After many years as a landscaper, his career shifted to working for the County of Chester in the Domestic Relations Department, as an investigator for Family Court. He retired from the department at the end of 2011.

Throughout his 70 years as a West Chester resident, Lou was a member of the Italian Social Club, where he served as president and trustee. His family was involved in St. Agnes Parish, where Lou and his family proudly participated in the annual Feast of the Assumption festivities in August every year.  Lou and his wife, Margaret, were active with this beautiful tradition to honor our Blessed Mother and saw two of his daughters participate in the annual Procession, beginning with carrying the Queen’s cape, then having the honor of becoming the Queen. His son, Joe, also carried banners alongside his sisters.  Lou was also a member of the Sons of Italy Lodge Guido Baccelli, a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, and a member of the Chester County Constables Association.

Lou had a love for the outdoors all of his life. He enjoyed gardening, landscaping his home, learning about various plants, and feeding the birds with his numerous bird feeders at his home. He loved tending to his flowers and giving them away for others to enjoy.  Lou also enjoyed sitting by the fireplace and splitting firewood, which seemed to always be a “family” event. He would start his day with his cup of coffee, while reading the newspaper. As Lou got older, he would enjoy watching old western movies, college football, and the Philadelphia Eagles.

Lou is survived by his devoted wife of 48 years, Margaret, of Huntsville, AL; daughters Maria Ann Scarfo of Coatesville, PA, and Elaine Marie Scarfo of Huntsville, AL; baby grandson, Joseph Anthony Scarfo of Huntsville, AL; and sister Theresa Scarfo Potter of Thorndale, PA.

In addition to his parents, Lou is preceded in death by his son, Joseph A. Scarfo, brothers Joseph Scarfo, Philip Scarfo, and sister Mary Scarfo Mervine.
