Janet Smith Obituary

Janet L. Smith, 88 of West Chester, PA died Thursday 20, 2018 at her home.

Born July 25, 1930 in Caspian, Michigan, she was the wife of the late James E. Smith and was the daughter of the late Robert McEldowney and the late Hazel Kringle McEldowney.  

Janet graduated from the University of Minnesota with a bachelor’s degree in music.  She also attended the Eastman School of music and later graduated from West Chester University with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts.  She was an accomplished violinist and played for the Pottstown, Reading and Kennett symphony orchestras.  She later taught violin, viola and cello at the Taylor’s Music Store in West Chester as well as private lessons.

Janet was an incredibly artistic and talented individual.  She leaves behind a legacy of creativity, self-expression and love.  Her true passions in life were music and art.  Over the years, she produced many beautiful paintings, sculptures and pottery.  She was also a voracious reader, she enjoyed rock hounding and puzzles and was a regular at the bingo table at the Goshen Country Fair.

She will be remembered as a sweet, loving and kind mother and grandmother.  She is survived by her children, Sheldon Smith of West Chester, Stella Smith of Downingtown, Stanley Smith of Coatesville and Sharon Josefowski of Long Beach Island, NJ; grandchildren Amanda Gefner, Elaine Josefowski, Christopher Josefowski and Melissa Pollock; great grandchildren Hunter, Anna and Elizabeth; and her brother John McEldowney.

A private memorial service will be held for family and close friends with visitation from 1-2pm, followed by her memorial service at 2pm on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at the DellaVecchia, Reilly, Smith and Boyd Funeral Home, Inc, 410 N. Interment will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation or the ASPCA.
