Franklin Wortley Obituary

Franklin “Frank” P. Wortley, 96, of West Chester, Pennsylvania, died peacefully on November 25, 2018.

He was born on January 27, 1922 in Des Moines, Iowa.  He grew up in La Grange, Illinois. He moved to Chicago, Illinois and began working for International Business Machine (IBM), where he met his wife of 68 years, Mildred “Mid” O. Wortley, who predeceased him in 2012.  They were married in 1943.

Frank had an impressive career with IBM, spanning over 40 years.  He accepted promotional opportunities and career advancement at IBM, which transferred his family from Chicago to St. Louis, Missouri; La Grange, Illinois; and New Canaan, Connecticut.  Frank had many friends and was a hard worker, earning him many promotions, awards and management positions during his career with IBM.

In 1970, Frank and Mid purchased a condo in Crystal Sands on Siesta Key in Sarasota, Florida where they shared many wonderful years until moving to West Chester, Pennsylvania in 2008 to be closer to family.

Some of Frank and Mid’s most cherished memories were made during years of sailing on the Long Island Sound aboard their sailboat, “Tempo”.  Frank also loved scuba diving, swimming, and hunting.  He was an amateur photographer and enjoyed taking and developing his own photographs.

He was a loving and kind parent, grandparent, and ultimately great-grandparent.  He taught his family a love for the sea.  He had memorable stories from sailing, scuba diving, and of traveling the world with the love of his life, Mid.

In addition to his beloved wife, Frank was predeceased by his daughter, Celia W. (David) Preston.

He is survived by his sons John R. “Rick” (Cheryl) Wortley and Geoffrey A. (Victoria) Wortley; his son-in-law David R. Preston; his grandchildren Joshua (Joy) Wortley, Miranda (Daniel) Budde, Carrie (Jason) Malavolta, and Michael (Alexandra March) Preston; his great-grandchildren Grace Wortley, Mia Malavolta, Ian Budde, Ella Malavolta, and Teagen Budde; and many extended family members.

Service and interment are private.
