Era Stavropoulos Obituary

Era Stavropoulos, 85, of West Chester, PA, passed away Wednesday, November 7, 2018.

She was the beloved wife of Vasilios (Bill) Stavropoulos.

Born June 14, 1933 in Greece, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Havelos and the late Katina Anagnostides Havelos. A World War II survivor, she immigrated to the United States when her family permanently relocated to Fayetteville, North Carolina, soon after the war. Her father and his brothers had previously started businesses in Fayetteville and were the first Greek immigrants there. Era moved to West Chester with Bill, an owner of DeStarr’s Restaurant, after marrying in 1963.

Era graduated from Fayetteville High School in North Carolina, where she was a member of the Glee Club, and attended Peace College in Raleigh, North Carolina, where she majored in business. She was president of the Philoptochos Ladies’Auxiliary of Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Fayetteville, which her father had helped to establish. Era worked as an administrative assistant at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, for several years. She met her husband at a church event, while he served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort Bragg.

She enjoyed painting and drawing, playing the piano, singing, reading, going to the beach with her family, and gardening. Era was known for her kindness and humor, gracious and beautiful nature, intelligence and lifelong interest in learning, wonderful cooking and hospitality, and devout faith.

Era dearly loved, and is loved by, her family. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Yvette Kounios, and son-in law, John; her son, Steven Stavropoulos, and daughter-in-law, Maureen; and grandchildren, Victoria and Luke Stavropoulos and Bill and Daphne Kounios, all of West Chester; as well as cousins, nieces, and nephews in Greece, England, and the United States. Her late brother, John Havelos, of North Carolina, and late sister, Ellie Gile, of Texas, were also very dear to her.

Relatives and friends are invited to her Visitation on Friday, Nov. 16, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 30 E. Forge Rd. Media, PA 19063; followed by her Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m.
