Charles P. "Chuck" Johnson Obituary

Charles P. (Chuck) Johnson 6/6/1941 – 7/16/2019

Chuck was born and raised in Western Springs, IL and graduated from Lyons Township High School in 1959.  He was accepted into the NROTC program and attended the University of Southern California on an NROTC scholarship, graduating with a BS in Industrial Engineering. During his college years, Chuck was active with his fraternity, Tau Kappa Epsilon.

After graduating on June 13, 1963, and being commissioned as an Ensign, USN, he married his college sweetheart, Kathleen McKee.  They headed to his first duty station, Submarine School, New London, CT.  Chuck had been accepted into the Nuclear Submarine Program, after being interviewed by Admiral Hyman G. Rickover.

After 18 months of training, Chuck was assigned to his first submarine, USS Haddo (SSN604) based in Charleston, SC.  He spent two years aboard Haddo, and departed Charleston to be stationed aboard the USS Sunfish (SSN 649), in new construction, Quincy, Mass.   After commissioning of Sunfish, Chuck spent the remainder of his active career as Weapons Officer aboard.

In 1971, Chuck left the Active Navy and began a career with Public Service Electric and Gas Company of New Jersey, as Startup Engineer at their Nuclear Generation Station, Salem, NJ.  At the same time, he remained in the active Naval Reserves, serving in units both in Philadelphia, PA, and Wilmington, DE.  He retired from the Navy in 1985, as a Captain.

After 27 years with PSE&G, Chuck retired and moved into consulting in the nuclear power industry.  He also served on the East Bradford Township Planning Board and as a member of St. Agnes Parish in West Chester, Chuck served as an usher for over 20 years.

Chuck and Kathy celebrated 56 years of marriage during which time they traveled to over 35 countries and all 50 states (48 by their motor coach).  They also celebrated the many wonderful friendships made over the years, both through work and the 13 moves they had made.

Chuck is survived by his wife Kathleen, his son Douglas (Wendy), daughter Kristen Jaenisch (James), grandchildren Payton and Karrine Jaenisch, Aidan, Kendall, and Nathan Johnson and by his brother C. Douglas Johnson (Kathryn), and numerous nieces and nephews.
