Sr. Carmel Marie, I.H.M. was my teacher during the first half of the 1971/1972 school year. During the second half she was Principal of the school. As a class we missed her daily presence as our teacher. She was a fine teacher, stern, and loving. I think the stern part was an act. It was the end of the school year and as usual in an I.H.M. school it was a massive cleanup. Some of us had found some water pistols, most likely taken from students throughout the year, and the battle was on with several of the Sisters involved. As I was preparing to fire upon Sr. Bernadette she ducked and Sr. Carmel, who had come up to the third floor to inspect, was tagged with the water. I must have turned various shades of color and apologized profusely. As I handed Sister a paper towel to dry her Scapular I noticed her smirk to one of the Sisters. I had other pleasant meetings with Sr. Carmel, be they in her office making spit balls to put in a glass jar, cleaning the Convent, as a safety, or around the school. I witnessed first hand her love and devotion to the school community. My mother also had many meetings with Sister, not over me but, as a member of the Home and School Association. Mom would always how dedicated and caring Sister was. Sister Carmel could gitter bug with the best of them. Finally, she came to my First Mass and when I acknowledged her, she received the only standing ovation and the longest applause of all the dignitaries put together. I Remember very vividly her red face, similar to my red face when I shot her with the water pistol many years before. You know what they say about karma. She was a great lady and emulated Our Lady who was her patronize. Rest in peace Sister, you are greatly missed.
