Helen Theresa Carey, age 100, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 1, 2018 surrounded by her loving family. 

Helen was the wife to the late Philip P. Carey and mother to Margaret Hoffman (Robert), Jeanne Johnson (John), the late Philip Carey, Jr. (Marguerite), Joseph Carey, and James Carey (Donna). She was “Nanny” to 11 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Helen was a resident for 6 years at Barclay Friends in West Chester, a home which she truly loved. She formally lived in Sharon Hill for 60 years where she raised her five children. She was very active in the Holy Spirit Catholic Church and the Women’s Club of Sharon Hill.

Helen was born on September 14, 1917 in Philadelphia, the oldest of four children born to Joseph and Margaret Donlon.  She was loved dearly by her sisters the late Elizabeth Mallory, the late Mary Slavin, and survived by Sister Mary Margret Donlon, FMM of Busan, South Korea.   

Helen was a graduate of John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls High School in Philadelphia, and worked for the Philadelphia Inquirer for 20 years. 

Helen truly lived life to the fullest through spending time with friends and family, especially her grandchildren. She found happiness traveling through Europe, reading, and vacationing in Sea Isle City, NJ.  Helen’s most favorite hobby was locating the best garage sale or flea market of the week.  She loved searching for fun treasures for her grandchildren.

She was best known for her infectious sense of humor.  Her energy, warmth and zest for life will never be forgotten by those that were blessed to have known her.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, 120 St. Elizabeth Dr., Chester Springs, PA 19425 on Monday, January 8, 2018.  Visitation begins at 10 am followed by a Mass at 11 am.

Interment will be private.
