Harry Gilbert of West Chester 1924-2017

Following a brief illness, Harry Gilbert, 92, passed away peacefully at his home, The Barclay Friends Assisted Living of West Chester, on Saturday February 4, 2017. Harry was the devoted and beloved husband of Lorraine B. Gilbert (nee: Boehmler) with whom he recently celebrated sixty-nine years of wedded bliss. Harry was predeceased by his mother and father (Gilbert) of Shunk Street, Philadelphia and leaves behind dear friends and loving extended family members including two sisters-in-law, three nephews, a grandniece, and a grandnephew.

A 1948 graduate of The West Chester University of Pennsylvania, Harry majored in Health & Physical Education, beginning his teaching career, in the Kennett Area Consolidated School District before moving to B. Reed Henderson Senior High School (West Chester) to teach Health and Physical Education, as well as coach women’s volleyball and track & field. He taught in the WCASD for 27 years.

A talented artist, Harry’s watercolor landscapes were often of treasured West Chester area landmarks, including the stone home built from quarry rock on the fairway of the West Chester Golf & Country Club. The framed original hung for years in The West Chester University Alumni Hall where Harry was an active member of the WCU Alumni Association. An avid golfer, Harry achieved the distinguished Member Emeritus status at The West Chester Golf & Country Club, helping to co-found The Moles (Men of Leisure) Senior golfing group with his good friend, Dr. Robert Poole.

Married in January 1948 at The Westminster Presbyterian Church of West Chester, Harry and Lorraine enjoyed being active in church life there through worship, on holidays, at special musical events, and in fellowship with many of the caring pastors, deaconesses, and friends there.
