Gilbert Embree Gray

Our Uncle Gilbert passed away Monday, May 23, 2016. As he did most things in his life, he did it his way and under his terms.

Born April 30, 1923 in West Chester, PA he was the son of the late Irwin William Gray and the late Edith Embree Gray.

He was a 1941 graduate of Westtown Friends School where his love of Agriculture and Horticulture was nourished. He also took correspondence courses in Agriculture from Penn State University.

Gilbert worked for Wyeth Laboratories and their affiliates for almost 40 years.

He recently received a 75-year commendation for continuous membership in Marshallton Grange #1394 of the Patrons of Husbandry. He served as Master of the Grange on two occasions. First from 1947-1948 and again from 1999-2012, including presiding over the 100th Anniversary of Marshallton Grange in 2008.

In addition to working for Wyeth/Fermtech, he continued to farm in his spare time.

He also, in the 1950’s and early 60’s, served as Road Supervisor of West Bradford Township.

Not having any children of his own, he showered love on numerous “critters”, particularly horses, cows, dogs, and cats. However, to his niece, nephews, and friends, he was the rock we could all count on.

In addition to his parents, Gilbert is predeceased by his sister, Dorothy Perdue, and brother, I. Willard Gray.

He is survived by nephews William Perdue, Thomas Perdue and his wife Pat, and niece Deborah Stamm and her husband Gregory, and also Clark Smyers, along with a grandniece, Sarah Stamm, and a grandnephew, Andrew Stamm.

Our Uncle Gilbert was a true Gentleman.

Relatives and Friends are invited to his graveside service, on Friday, May 27, 2016 at 11:00am at Oakland Friends Cemetery, 1041 Pottstown Pike, West Chester, PA 19380.
