Elizabeth Holleran Spackman

Elizabeth H. Holleran Spackman a resident of Kendal-at-Longwood in Kennett Square died on the 31st of December 2017 at her residence.  She was born in Clarion, Pennsylvania in 1921 and was a daughter of the late Henry M. Hufnagel and Elizabeth Faller Hufnagel.  She was the widow of Richard P. Holleran and the widow of Horace B. Spackman, II.  Her decision to come east to attend Immaculata College from where she graduated in 1943 resulted in her marrying both of her husbands.  One of her Immaculata Roommates, Marie Lamb, of Coatesville was a childhood friend of Mr. Holleran.  They married in Clarion in 1947. 

She first met Mr. Spackman’s family when she came to Coatesville as a bride though she only came to know him while serving on the board of the Brandywine Hospital with him after the death of her first husband in 1975 and Mr. Spackman was himself widowed.  They were wed in 1992.  Her husbands were employed by the Lukens Steel Company in Coatesville and G. O. Carlson, Inc. steel fabricators, in Thorndale respectively.  Mrs. Spackman was often known to observe that only men connected to the steel industry were suitable husband material.

In addition to her work on the Hospital Board where she rose to Treasurer and Vice-Chairman of the Board, she was a long term Trustee of the The Young Men’s Christian Association of the Brandywine Valley where she served on the Emeritus Board at the time of her death.  She served on the Board of Chester County Council, Boy Scouts of America for almost two decades and was the recipient of its “Good Scout” award in 1985. 

She was on the Board of the West Chester Visiting Nurse Association in the early sixties and participated in the founding of its offshoot, Homemakers Service of Chester County where she served for many years and was the original treasurer for almost a decade.  She and her first husband played substantial roles in the amalgamation of the United Ways into the United Way of Chester County where she served on various committees and from whom she received the volunteer of the year award in 1985.  Mrs. Spackman was President of the Immaculata College Alumnae Association of Chester County in 1960. 

Her degree from Immaculata was in Economics and her career was in accounting.  During the second World War she was a field accountant for O’Neill & Company in Philadelphia a position that, had there been no war, would have been filled by a man.  She returned to Clarion in 1945 where she worked at the Citizens Trust Company and kept house for her recently-widowed father.

She was a member of the Whitford Country Club.  A Roman Catholic, she was a parishioner of Saint Agnes Church in West Chester.

She is survived by three daughters, Mary T. Holleran of Downingtown, Pennsylvania, Brigid A. Holleran of Bethesda, Maryland and Patricia Holleran of Raleigh, North Carolina and one son, Kevin Holleran of Downingtown, Pennsylvania.  She is also survived by three step-daughters, Marjorie S. Van Vort of Somerville, Massachusetts, Elizabeth S. Connors of Stratham, New Hampshire and Katherine S. Randall of Warwick, Rhode Island as well as a step-son, Charles H. Spackman of Chandler, Arizona.  She was also survived by 6 grandchildren, 8 step-grandchildren and one great grandchild and one step-great grandchild.  She was the last of her generation.  

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 o’clock a.m. on Saturday January 6, 2018 at the Saint Agnes Church 233 West Gay St. West Chester. Interment will take place privately.
