Dr. Waclaw Szymanski

Dr. Waclaw Szymanski of West Chester.

Waclaw A. Szymanski, Ph.D., D.Sc., 66 of West Chester, PA died Sunday August 7, 2016 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

Born December 12, 1949 in Gorlice, Poland he was the son of the late Karol Szymanski and the late Maria Pawlowska Szymanska.

He received his Master’s in Mathematics from the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland in 1972 while also earning a musical degree in piano. He received a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the Institute of Mathematics, Polish Academy of Sciences in 1974 and also a D.Sc. in Mathematics from the same institution in 1981.

Prior to joining West Chester University Dr. Szymanski taught at institutions of higher learning in Krakow, Poland; Mexico City, Mexico; Toronto, Canada; and Bloomington, Indiana.

Dr. Waclaw Szymanski joined West Chester University in 1985 where he subsequently received several awards and honors.  He was a member of London Mathematical Society and a life-member of American Mathematical Society.

He was fluent in four languages and travelled to five continents.  He also enjoyed hiking and music.

He is survived by his son, Lukasz (Tara) Szymanski, daughter, Marta (Revelino) Guron, brother, Leslaw Tadeusz Szymanski and 8 Grandchildren.

Relatives and Friends are invited to his visitation on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 from 8:30 am - 10:00 am at St. Agnes Church, 233 W. Gay St. West Chester, PA 19380; followed by his Funeral Mass at 10:00 am.

Interment will be held in Poland.
