Dr. David Armand Sprenkle

Dr. David Armand Sprenkle, 65, of Downingtown, died on Monday, August 14, 2017 in his home surrounded by family following a decade long battle with cancer. 

He was the husband of Elizabeth (Berra) Sprenkle, with whom he had celebrated 40 years of marriage. 

Born in Baltimore, Maryland on December 12, 1951, he was the son of Jean (Schriver) Sprenkle and the late Dr. Charles Aaron Sprenkle. 

Dr. Sprenkle graduated from Henderson High School in 1969, and went on to receive his Bachelor in Music Education in 1973 and Masters in Vocal Performance in 1974 from West Chester University. He completed his Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Maryland in 1988 with a dissertation and recordings of the 14th-century Italian composer Niccolo da Perugia. Dr. Sprenkle was also a member of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia professional music fraternity and Pi Kappa Lambda, a national music honor society. 

Dr. Sprenkle, beloved music professor, began his career at Palm Beach Atlantic College in West Palm Beach, Florida where he taught voice, trombone, and was the Chairman of the Department of Music from 1975-1987. He returned to West Chester University in 1987 as a member of the Vocal/Choral department where he taught voice and choral conducting. He was the director of the WCU Chamber Choir and Collegium Musicum and also served as Chairperson of the Vocal Choral Department and Undergraduate Coordinator for the School of Music during his tenure. He was a faculty recitalist, soloist, and conductor. Dr. Sprenkle was an excellent teacher and mentor who was greatly respected and admired and was an inspiration to his students. He retired in 2011 after teaching for 36 years. Dr. Sprenkle was granted the Professor Emeritus Award by the University in 2014.  

In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by his daughter, Jessa Berra Sprenkle, and son Justin Berra Sprenkle (Colleen); granddaughters, Emily Rose Sprenkle and Kate Elizabeth Sprenkle and sister, Kathy Taylor.

Dr. Sprenkle will be remembered for his love of family, passion for music and performance, dedication to recovery, cataloging of family history, and witty humor. 

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Celebration of Life memorial service at The Gables at Chadds Ford, 423 Baltimore Pike, Chadds Ford, PA 19317, on Wednesday, August 23, 2017. Visitation to occur at 1:00 pm, memorial service at 2:30 pm, with a reception to follow. 

Interment will be private at a later date at the Birmingham-Lafayette Cemetery in West Chester.

The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, a donation in his name be made to a charity of your choosing.
