Agnes T. Dougherty

Agnes Teresa Dougherty of West Chester, died July 28, 2015 at Bellingham Retirement Community in West Chester.

Our Mother, Agnes Teresa Dougherty, was born Agnes Hedlund on November 27, 1921. She is the youngest and last survivor of five children: brothers William, Frank, John, and her beloved sister Mary. They were born in the Nicetown section of North Philadelphia to Mary (maiden name, McGruddy) and Joel Hedlund.

Agnes was baptized and attended elementary school at Our Lady of Holy Souls on Venango Street. She graduated from John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls High School. 

During World War II, she assembled fuses at the Frankford Arsenal.

She married Daniel Dougherty of East Falls on January 9, 1943. They were married for seventy years and is survived by six children: Danny, Kathleen, Kevin, Brian, Eileen and Barry. They had twenty grandchildren, twenty-one great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

After the war, the family moved to Clementon, New Jersey and then to Levittown, Pennsylvania. In 1976, they moved to Florida (Lehigh Acres, Tallahassee, and Fort Myers).

Agnes sang in church choirs and was devoted to her Catholic faith, her husband, and her children.

She enjoyed crossword puzzles and cards, especially Pinochle and Kings in the Corner with her friends at Bellingham.

She lived in Florida for thirty-five years and visited her family in California, North Carolina, Nebraska and Thailand. She and Dan travelled with her family to Hawaii, Nebraska, Alaska, and Canada.

Relatives & friends are invited to her visitation 10:00 a.m., Fri. July 31, 2015 at SS. Peter & Paul Church, 1325 Boot Road, West Chester, PA 19380; followed by her Funeral Mass which begins at 11:00 a.m.

Interment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery in West Chester.
